Dome-umentary
A documentary about the Monolithic Dome Institute near Hillsboro, Texas. The monolitic dome is a a type of structure that saves energy but is somewhat hostile toward square tables. And The Monolithic Dome Institute is a small plot of land dotted with these concrete domes, which people live in and work in.
The Institute, being the center of the dome-building world, houses the headquarters for the magazine Dome News, where all the editors bemoan the fact that domes are an underappreciated housing structure, and none of the major architecture schools teach them. They would be good interview subjects. As would be the dome fanatics who come from around the world to take the Institute’s expensive hands-on classes on dome building. By the end of the class, all the students will have built their own domes.
All the dome houses have signs that say “Private Residence” outside of them, creating a nice post-apocalyptic effect. And there’s something sad and anti-social about the dome obsession, which guarantees pathetic interviews with unintentionally funny people - exactly the sort of thing documentaries thrive on.
Just be sure you get at least one bitter Dome salesperson to say, “It’s hard to get people to think round.”
