Softcover books with book jackets
The best thing about hardcover books (well, second best thing) is that their book jackets are like convenient built-in bookmarks. So why can’t a softcover book have a book jacket? It would be more expensive than softcover books without the jacket, but cheaper than hardcover books and just as convenient as far as saving your place (though, of course, still more at risk of bending than its hardcover cousins).
There would then be three releases of a book. First the hardcover. Then the softcover with the jacket. And then the plain softcover.
Maybe there could also be a release between the softcover with the jacket and the plain softcover - a softcover with a “free” standard bookmark. And maybe the bookmark could have a movable arrow on it so that you could mark the exact line you stopped on.
