Re-Writing John Lennon

Now that John Lennon is dead, he can’t stop us from changing his songs. Remember that part in “Imagine” where he says:

You may say that I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one.

That’s the refrain of the song, but thanks to the second sentence, it makes almost no sense. What’s his point? “If there’s a lot of dreamers, that makes it okay”? “Let the blind lead the blind”? “That sheep just jumped off a cliff, we should too!”?

Mightn’t be better if it were:

You may say that I’m a dreamer

But you’re the one with your eyes closed.

That way you’re completing the dream reference with a clever pun that also makes a profound point. “Hey, guys, you’re calling me a dreamer with my head in the clouds, but at least my eyes are wide open to the world’s possibilities. You, stuck in your so called here and now reality, can’t open your eyes to see how things could be different.”
