A dad who is impossible to please

A son is frustrated, because his dad doesn’t seem to approve any of his professions. His dad was annoyed when he offered to take over the family business (dentistry), his dad complained when the son went on to become a famous actor, and the dad wouldn’t let his son hear the end of it when the son became a computer scientist.

The son doesn’t know what he could possibly be doing wrong, until after a heart-to-heart, when he finds out that his dad is so dissatisfied with the world, and so unimpressed by it, that any participation in life on his son’s part is a disappointment to him. He admits that the only thing that would make him happy would be for his son to start a totally different parallel reality. He also admits that it’s impossible.

So they have some kind of reconciliation, but there is some secret lingering sadness on the dad’s part that his son didn’t even try to start a new reality off-shoot.
