A Simple Solution to Presidential Elections
After the Democratic and Republican contenders have been selected, and it looks like one of them is the front-runner to win the election, it would be cool if the front-runner invited his/her competitor to be his/her running mate.
Say Obama wins the Democratic primary and about a month into his campaign against, let’s say McCain, polls show Obama beating McCain 60/40. It would be great if Obama chose McCain to be his running mate at that point, because the election would essentially be over. McCain would have to do it because he’s bi-partisan and because he would rather be a vice president than nothing. And Obama would want to do it to neutralize his opposition.
Technically, the Republicans could nominate someone else after McCain dropped out to join team Obama, but they wouldn’t. You can’t stop the two front-runners when they team up. Republicans know that. Anyway, they would be content just to have a Republican vice president. For one party to win the presidency twice in a row is just plain greed.
Really this is just an update of the olde style American elections, where the second place winner in an election became the vice president. That was nice too.
