Instigate Evolution on Other Planets
This article about whether there is any form of life on Mars made me think NASA’s approach is all wrong. Instead of analyzing Mars soil and hoping to find microbes that currently exist there, NASA should be bringing the microbes. I’m sure germs and bacteria and worms and flies and parasites can survive on Mars; they just haven’t had the chance because they’ve never been there.
Roaches are famously the only potential survivors of nuclear warfare. Surely they can deal with a planet that’s treacherously low in carbon. I say we drop a bunch of roaches on Mars, then go back in a million years and see if a thriving race of roach people has evolved. It would be interesting to see what kind of society they devise to deal with the harsh environment on Mars. I bet they would have a Scandinavian-style welfare state because of how cold it is.
