The Bright Side Of Talking About Ideas As If They Will Happen, Even Though They Never Will
It’s generally thought to be depressing when people have an idea together, or even multiple ideas, and they talk excitedly about doing them, but they never actually do. “Look at these poor deluded souls having these grand plans and never accomplishing anything,” cynical observers say. “Sad. So sad.”
But they’re looking at it the wrong way. Talking about doing some cool idea you have is just an enjoyable thing to talk about. It’s a topic of conversation like any other. Even if it never amounts to anything, it’s still fun to get pumped about some idea, brainstorm how you’re going to put it together, and dream of all the riches it will bring of you.
Why is it depressing to talk about starting a band that you’ll never actually start, but it’s okay to talk about some band you watched the other night? Both conversations are equally unproductive, but one of them at least has the illusion of productivity. And it’s not like that illusion has to be brutally shattered. By the next day you’ve already forgotten the idea and moved on. You just had a fun time dreaming.
That being said, it is better if you can bring your ideas to life as well.
