Youth in Revolt
A movie idea from Greg Newburn:
A precocious youngster organizes a public school student strike to protest the schools’ failure and power of teachers’ unions.
My own take on this is that it should probably end with a school shooting, ala “If….”. But that’s only because I think all movies should be more like “If….”. It probably wouldn’t actually be appropriate in this case.
I think this idea has a lot of promise. It’s a reversal of the typical story of the heroic teacher coming in and finding the potential in bad, unruly kids. Here the students are fine, it’s the school that’s bad. You could have a lot of fun with how bad the teachers are, and how the unions encourage it. And there could be interesting kid characters besides the hero, like a kid who leaves to be home schooled (he comes back after the hero is victorious and makes the school safe for learning). There could also be a religious kid whose one issue is prayer in school, and kind of gets made fun of by the other protesting kids.
Greg, I think you should write this. As a teacher, it won’t be hard for you to come up with material.
