Puking to protest it all

There’s a lot I admire about my friend Emily DePrang, but one trait I’ve been thinking about lately is her propensity to throw up when distressed. The only time I can remember right now is when she threw up before a job interview (a job she now has), but I know she’s puked under more profound circumstances too.

I always fantasize about myself puking in response to witnessing something horrible.  If I saw someone die in a car accident right in front of me, I’d like to think I would spew all over the street. If I heard of a friend of mine dying in a car accident, I’d like to hurl all over my phone. And if I found out that an innocent person was going to jail, I’d like to puke all over the country.

It’s either that or crying. But puking seems like the most extreme thing you can do, which makes it the only appropriate response to the world at its most intolerable.

I guess that makes eating the best reaction to the world at its greatest.
